Cage Lights: The Classic Industrial Statement

Cage lights originated in early 1900s factories as safety guards — the welded steel cage protected exposed incandescent bulbs from swinging tools and machinery. Today the same aesthetic works in kitchens, mudrooms, entryways, and stairways where you want a strong industrial statement without the heavier proportions of a full cage chandelier.

EcoLuxe Decor's cage light collection uses solid welded steel cages (not stapled wire mesh), matte-black and aged-bronze powder coating, and E26 sockets that accept vintage Edison filament bulbs or LED Edison equivalents. Every fixture is UL-listed for damp locations so you can install cage lights outdoors under covered porches, in bathrooms outside the shower splash zone, or in laundry rooms without worry.

All cage lights ship free within the continental US and include a 2-year warranty.

How to Use Cage Lights Around Your Home

Cage pendants over a kitchen island work in pairs or triples with 24–30 inch spacing, same as any other pendant. Their exposed bulb reads more casual than a solid dome pendant — right for farmhouse kitchens, less right for polished modern kitchens with high-gloss cabinets.

Cage sconces work beside bathroom mirrors, hallway walls, and outside covered porches. Mount at 60–66 inches to the center of the fixture for adult eye level. Use LED Edison bulbs at 2200K warm white to preserve the amber factory-glow effect — whiter bulbs kill the mood the cage aesthetic depends on.

Semi-flush cage fixtures replace a plain ceiling flush mount with something that has visual character while still working with 7–8 foot ceilings where a full pendant would hang too low.

Pro tip: The cage is the design; the bulb is the light. Choose Edison-style LED bulbs with visible curved tungsten or spiral filaments — that filament pattern is what makes cage lighting look right. Avoid frosted or diffused LED bulbs inside cage fixtures; they defeat the exposed-bulb aesthetic.

Are cage lights safe outdoors?
Cage lights marked damp-location rated on the product page are safe under covered porches and outdoor overhangs. Check the UL rating on each product page; most fixtures in this collection are damp-location rated.
Do the bulbs get hot enough to burn if you touch the cage?
Edison LED bulbs run at 100-140 degrees F - warm to the touch but not hot enough to burn briefly. The cage itself stays cooler than the bulb because it dissipates heat to the surrounding air.
What bulb wattage should I use?
40W-60W Edison-style LED bulbs (E26 base) are the right choice for most cage lights. Higher wattages create too much glare from the exposed bulb.
Are cage lights just an industrial style, or do they work elsewhere?
Cage lights work in industrial, farmhouse, coastal-modern, and rustic interiors. They pair especially well with reclaimed wood, exposed brick, subway tile, and leather furnishings.
Are the cages powder-coated or plated?
All cage fixtures in this collection use powder-coated steel cages. Powder coating is more durable than plating and resists chipping around the welds.
Can I paint the cage to match my decor?
