How to Place a Floor Lamp for the Best Light

Match the floor lamp style to the job. Arc lamps go behind or beside a sofa, with the arc extending over the seating area so the light falls directly on laps for reading. Tripod and drum-shade lamps anchor an empty room corner and add ambient light across the whole room — place them 12–18 inches from the walls, not tight into the corner. Torchieres uplight a room by bouncing 200–400 watts of equivalent light off a white or light-colored ceiling; skip torchieres if you have dark ceilings, which absorb the light.

Reading lamps beside a chair or bed should place the bottom of the shade at eye level when seated. Choose a lamp with an adjustable arm or gooseneck if the reading spot changes with different chair positions.

Most floor lamps do best with 800–1600 lumen LED bulbs at 2700K warm white for living room ambient use, or 3000K neutral-warm for task reading.

Pro Tip
Pro tip: A floor lamp behind a sofa should have its bottom shade 60–65 inches above the floor — tall enough that the bulb isn't visible from the sofa seat but low enough that the light spread reaches the entire seating area. If your lamp is much shorter, elevate it on a small side table to reach that height.
